I loved this book — loved Ruck, ached for Melanthe, and found Allegretto compelling. Never read his book, however, as one of my turnoffs is very young heroines paired with older heroes, and IIRC, that’s the case in Shadowheart.
YMMV, so it should not stop anyone else from enjoying Allegretto’s. Ruck, an invincible English knight, loses his new wife when she declares herself a prophet and pledges her life to the Church.

Or, occasionally, a little too much. Truly, Laura Kinsale's charactersation in this book is superb. Melanthe's life is so complicated, she wouldn't feel out of place in a George R R Martin novel, and thus her reaction to her sudden, freeing isolation is complicated as well: part liberation and part mental breakdown.
